i took another step toward pacifism

Posted in culture, philosophy at 10:55 am by

I’ve disagreed before with Greg about being a pacifist (and I think Adam and others agree with Greg.) He is one. I wouldn’t have self-labelled myself as one. Indubitably, by broaching this topic here, I will do injustice to Greg’s perspective but as I understand it–and Greg is, as always, welcome to correct my understanding of his point–Greg’s position is this: it is wrong for Christians to be involved in any violent action, including being affiliated with the military, etc.

Now, I’m not saying I totally agree with the perspective I just presented, but I think that Spike TV’s reality TV show, “The Ultimate Fighter” may just have started to turn me into a card carrying pacifist.

You may be asking yourself, “What the hell were you doing watching such a stupid TV show?” Good question. I don’t know. It was on, so I watched it, okay. What really got me, though, about the show was the interview of Diego Sanchez from Albuquerque, New Mexico after he became the Ultimate Fighter.

Now, I don’t expect young (22 years old) Diego Sanchez to be a sage wise man just because of his 4 or so month brush with fame. But something about his interview really got me. Diego just got finished with kicking the ever living shit out of his opponent. Diego, during that fight, climbed onto his opponent and sat on him while pounding him in the face time and time again. Diego drew his opponent’s blood, and it seemed like, when he saw that blood, he pounded all that much harder–pummelling his opponent’s face until the referree called the fight.

What got me though was the post fight interview. Diego, with the blood of his opponent dripping from his gloves and face, got up on national television and here’s what he said (paraphrased with my thoughts interspersed (I’ve also offered an artistic rendition of what I imagine God’s thoughts may well have been)):

Announcer: Diego, how do you feel?

Diego: Well, first of all, I just have to thank…

Me (thinking out loud next to Jen): Oh, shit. Please don’t say God. Please Diego, do Christianity a favor and don’t say God.

Diego: Jesus Christ my personal Lord and Savior.

Me: Dammit.

God: Dammit.

Diego: Because…

Me: Oh shit, there’s more…

Diego: without him none of this would’ve been possible…

Me: So there’s no way you could’ve kicked the shit out of your opponent with out God saying it was okay?

Diego: without him I wouldn’t have won this fight…

Me: Bullshit

God: Bullshit

Me: So…let me get this theology straight…Jesus was rooting for Diego and was against Kenny Florian. But, if Kenny Florian was a Christian this would’ve been a fair fight? Jesus Christ gave you the power to mame another human being?

Diego: (goes on ad nauseum about his warped version of Christianity)

Me: Oh, man. I think Greg might have been right…Diego please shut up. Please. Please?

So, in short, I’m not sure I can agree with young Diego. I don’t think that God had anything to do with him kicking the shit out of Kenny Florian…except maybe bring Diego into existance. But, as far as kicking the shit out of people, that’s all Diego…he may as well be honest with himself.

Unbelievable. It really jumps into sharp contrast when you put it in this context, but it is just as stupid when it is a receiver who catches a touchdown pass or player who hits a winning shot. It just seems that much more awful when it is such obvious violence against another human being.

Makes me ashamed to be from Albuquerque. But we are the home of many boxers. Usually spoken of with pride. We also speak with pride and give God the glory for dropping the Atomic Bomb on Japan two times. Remember Bush strutting aboard the Abraham Linclon thanking God for our victory over other people who claim to believe in Him. To me the only form of justified violence is self-defense, but Christ calls for us to turn the other cheek even on than. It does go against Human Nature, but that is exactly what Christ is trying to get us to do. Spiritual nature over Human (flesh) nature. To glorify God when we are putting Human over the Spiritual smacks of blasphemy.

I may have to add this to my “When Theology goes Bad…” list.

I remember sitting in church a few years ago and hearing a re-interpretation of “turn the other cheek”. Always before I had been taught that this was a non-aggressive move - particularly when it is considered in light of the “if he compells you to walk a mile, offer him a second” teaching. That day, however, I was told that Jesus was actually trying to say that we should learn how to take a punch. “Be a man and do it again,” is what the teaching was twisted into.

Yeah, it doesn’t fit with anything else Jesus ever said. Since when has that stopped people from believing it? Half of the things most people think are in the Bible are from Shakespeare. The other half someone just made up because it sounded cool.

It’s also similar to those rap artists who make violent, obscene, or misogynistic music and then thank God for their success.

    Points well taken, Joan.

Jessica Simpson thanks God, too. *sigh* (And, even more damning, Ashlee probably does too.)

Though, I think the most poigniant counter example of this phenomena was in a Grammy speech by Bono for album of the year (for All That You Can’t Leave Behind.) Bono actually mentioned that he hesitated to thank God because God could probably pick out all the mistakes in the songs (i.e. ‘that chord was totally off here, and you were a few bars behind there.’)

Ahhh. My only response to this sort of thing is to remind the offendor that when his Generals suggested to Abraham Lincoln that it might be meet to pray for God to be on the Union side of the recent unpleasantness, Lincoln replied that he would rather pray that the Union was on God’s side.

Giving God the glory for granting us the capacity to injure, maim and kill our fellow sojourners on this rock strikes me as extremely perverse.

Of course, there are OT passage that give the willies at least that badly, too. But we seem to be well down the road to becoming an OT-based society.

Watching this made me sick. Even boxing is beginning to get to me. I mean the they are athletes no doubt and show great skill in training. But the end result of smashing someone in the head so hard that they don’t have the sense to stand up anymore seems, to me, evil at best.

Plus, have you ever been hit? That shit hurts!

I followed this link from another forum.

If Christianity is about passing judgement on others - and from all acounts, that’s about all it is - you folks are doing a bang-up job.

Diego has chosen pugilism as a career, and there’s nothing “evil” about it. You seem to confuse two willing participants in a ring with the perpetuation of “violence” - violence is about bringing harm to an unwilling victim, not testing your skill level against another trained athlete.

Nobody dragged Kenny Florian into the ring. He was aware of the potential outcomes and he’s calloused to it. Bloodying a combat athlete and smacking a random stranger over the head are two completely diferent things with completely different intentions.

You don’t get to pick and choose who fits your model for worship. If Diego draws strength from God to do his job - and it’s a job that requires more discipline and sheer courage than anything short of law enforcement or military work - then that’s his business.

But don’t let me disrupt your sewing circle. I’m sure God is very interested in your personal feelings of who’s fit to look to Him for help and who isn’t.

So Diego can’t thank God for fighting, but you can pepper your article with expletives and purporting to speak for God? And to think, not one of the so-called Christians who responded to this article had anything to say to you about your blasphemy. What you have written is MUCH more offensive than an athlete thanking God for doing well.

listen to me you brainwashed mindless hypocrites, you know nothing of diego, the sport he works for or the kind of work it takes to do what he does, trust me it is far more difficult than going to church every sunday, paying your local parish your indulgences so you can “go to heaven” and then patting yourselves on the back for being “good obiendient christians.” how dare you criticize the work of diego, how much blood was spilled in the name of god during the crusades past and present my friends? or cant you reflect enough to answer that one…hey brandon, when the meek (christians like you) inherit the earth, how meek do you think they will be then? Your religion and lives are simply built on the promise of divine retribution that will be realized at some indeterminate later date against all the trangressors that you meet in your earthly lives….all the bullshit about you christians turning the other cheek is just so that the payoff of your entrance into the “kingdom of heaven” where you will relish in the torture and torment of your non christian enemies will be that much sweeter. You hypocrites make me sick, why dont you stick to swindling and brainwashing the old, sick, feeble, mindless and helpless, and leave yourselves out of the harsh realities of the fight world, trust me fools, you, jesus and all your “holy” pedophiliac crew up in heaven wont be coming anywhere near the arenas where the real battles are fought and where real people learn about themselves and eachother, you think a fight is about destroying a man, it is about learning your limits, pushing against them, conquering adversity and in the end realizing that you are a better person for it for having tried and tried and tried, yeah it takes a lot more work than going to church and buying your way into your heaven, but then again it isnt for you “cold and timid souls” who will never know defeat nor victory, your fate is the one that you have resigned yourselves to at the whim of your corrupt and ignoble masters who will control and use you as they see fit and as long as you are too blind to see that, then are winning and I am laughing.
“Do not concern yourself with the critique who points out where the strong man stumbled or the doer of deeds could have done better…the credit belongs to the man in the arena, whose face is marred by his sweat and blood, whose persistance, skill, and determination has enabled him to conquer the sort of adversity that makes those cold and timid souls too fearful to challenge their own obstacles and shortcomings cower with fear. Theirs is the fate of becoming those who never were….in the end, their cowardice shall always be their undoing, for they are unwilling to rise to the occassion.”
thats all for today kids…schools out.

I really hope this site is a put-on like landoverbaptist.org.

With that said Diego was gracious enough to thanked God for allowing him to be where he was that day, and was grateful he was giving the strength to train and prepare through adversity and come out the victorious man that night.

You believe God disaproves or codemns Diego’s career and you take it upon yourselves to judge the man.
Judge not that ye be not judged. You really belief God approves of you labeling others “bad Christians” and having the arrogance and pride to view yourselves “superior”? While you have the ignorance to in your self-righteous minds place “profanities” in the mouth of God because you feel you have the same thought process as him.

Another verse you might stumble upon if you were to truly research for yourself God’s teaching rather than letting a “preacher” or another brainwash you “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall”.

Dude…. who are you to judge ?? I think that what people forget is that Christianity = a personal relationship between you and Jesus Christ (NOT WHAT EVERYONE ELSE SEES IT AS). It is not wrong to be a Christian fighter…. it matters what you have in your heart as you are doing it. Fighting is a professional sport… it is much different then getting into fights . Diego is a fighter and this is what he chose as a profession. God gave us free will to choose what we do for a living but he commanded us this in Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all of your heart as working for the Lord, not for men. He also commands us in the book of Psalms 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all of your heart lean not on your own understanding; in all of your ways acknowlege him and he will direct your paths.
Diego is doing exactly what he should do by acknowleging Christ! You my friend, should for sure not be putting words in Gods mouth! Try this…. before you take the speck of dust out of your neighbors eye, remove the plank from your own eye!! God bless

Too bad for you who judge. I’ve fought for many years from Albuquerque. I know Diego and many of the martial artists from there. I am also very involved in ministry. Spent many years involved with youth ministries of the real kind. With guys and girls who are hard core street bangers, you want to find an ice breaker with these kids..it won’t be with your knitting gatherings or tongue and cheek antics. This is a sport, and so now I’m going to be labeled as a bad believer because I pratice and compete in full contact martial arts. You can bet your lazy bottoms that whenever I won otr any of my friends that believe, we give thanks for keeping all participants safe. If you call all this basking of athelets christianity….then you can keep it. How are you going to ever see non-believers come the way of the cross with attitudes like that. dis really sux that i am really late to this debate. Nobody ’s gonna read this but i gotta say what i feel.
I am a Christian and i am confused w/ what my “Brothers” or saying. The non-believers seem to have a better understanding about our Relgion then we do. We are not supposed to pass judgement we are to show ppl the way to God not trun them away. but anyways back on topic.

personally i believe there is nothing wrong with fighting as long as the two ppl are willing. they both know the concquences, so there is nothing wrong. say if someone started beating the shit out of an unsuspecting person that is wrong. what if someone or people jumped us what are we supposed to do stay there and take a beating and possibly die or wined up in the hospital. if that happened to me i fight back knocking out as many of them as i can. if it was one person i would try to talk if that wasn’t working i’d lay his ass out or put up a fight at least. God does not want any of his childern to be hurt so he gave us that strength to fight physicly or not. You do know there r more ways to then with just fists. We are acttually fighting right now or call it “debating” whatever it’s the same shit xcpt w/ a disguse.

Fist I’d just like to say that I don’t normally do forums for my own personal reasons, but I stumbled in here whilst running a search for Diego Sanchez. I’m gonna take a wiiiiiiild guess and say that most of these comments are american. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not your enemy, I love America and what it represents but this makes me sick.

I am also an MMA fighter. I am 19yrs old, have a record of 6 wins, no losses. I teach wrestling at the local youth centre, and currently am studying at Glasgow University. I live in the UK where we christians go to church, worship god, and do NOT ram it down people’s throats.

Many of the cold and timid souls in this forum fail to even try understanding the nature of mixed martial arts. At first look, it can take somebody by surprise. My friends and family thought I was gonna get killed when they saw what it is i was doing. What can i say? It looks worse than it is. Perhaps you have the image of a boxer like Tyson in your head when you think of MMA. The purpose of “The Ultimate Fighter” was to show Americans, not to mention the ppl over here, that MMA was not as bad as ppl make out. It is safer than boxing, because the gloves don’t rattle the brain about and cause damage to it. Not to mention the extensive rules that, in my opinion, is what separates it from being a real fight.

It just makes me sick that someone who competes in a sport that is too much for timid little choir boys to watch means they’re not christian.

I’ll say this, given the recent bloodbath created by US dumbass patrol in Iraq (which incidently my friends in the service have to bear the brunt of)…God Bless America?

I have always been taught, if you want to believe in god you can. Don’t rub it in people’s faces, but don’t hide your faith either. Diego Sanchez has done this and i take my hat off to him. When others were drinking and wasting time in the Ultimate Fighter house, he was reading the bible.

Why can’t you people (yes, YOU people) just get on with your lives? What drives you to register your ignorance across the internet? At least I have the excuse that I found this by mistake and was angry at the comments made by this Brandon.

I’m sure he’s taken a lot of criticism and insults on this page. I don’t know where christianity generally permits you to speak out against your own religion. If a psychotic knife-weilding, paedaphilic, murderous, hateful Brandon thinkalike spoke of god, he would still have the right because that’s how it is. If you don’t agree head on over to a non-democratic nation where there’s fixed criteria for religions.

Your arrogance of calling latecomers “trolls” is transparent buddy. We see through it, you can stop pretending your not bothered. The fact is, 3 months ago I was doing something just a little more useful with my life. See my name?

Has anyone ever given you the piece of advice, “Don’t talk about what you don’t know.” If not, consider it given! NO ONE can know what God is thinking (offense number one.) Second, since you weren’t a regular watcher of the show and you don’t know Diego, how could you know what role God played in his success. Maybe Diego wasn’t inferring that God was against Kenny Florian, maybe it’s just that God gave Diego the determination to train hard and do well in his fight (offense number two.) Diego did what all good Christians are called to do and gave glory to God, he always has and always will!!!! Maybe if you knew anything about the sport, Diego or Christianity at that, you’d understand instead of negative blogging against a fellow Christian you would be giving glory to God yourself.

By the way, the Christian litmus test link isn’t working. I can’t believe it just wasted 20 minutes of my time answering all of those questions.

Anyway, do you think it is unchristian like for someone to drink alcohol or smoke a cigar? God gave us such things like alcohol and sex for our enjoyment. It’s when our sinful nature takes it too far then it becomes bad.

I actually mostly agree with what you wrote about athletes giving praise to God after they win. It used to really bother me when I see pro football and basketball players giving praise to God and giving credit to God after they have won. So what? You’re not going to praise God if you lose in your sport? God’s all of a sudden not a good God to you then? But you know what’s even worse? The celebrities and rap stars that give praise to God for their success. They’re most materialistic and vain human beings in the world, mainly because they have all of it right?

I train in mixed martial arts and in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and I’m a Christian. Am I a bad Christian because I might hurt someone in a sport competition? No. There are many ways we can bring glory to God. God does not want us all to be Amish. Are Christian football players bad Christians because they tackle each other? If you think so, then pretty much any sort of competition isn’t glorifying to God.

    Ke,

Perhaps, methinks, you’ve taken one too many kicks to the head prior to happening upon my blog. In the future, it might behoove you to engage in the process of “read, THINK…(and specially for you, Ke think some more), then comment” as you’ll likely receive less flack.

Also, if you’d read the notice on the Worldview Weekend page you’ll see that for a small number of browsers the test does not work. The vast majority of folks had no problem with the test.

    Love,
    Brandon

I think you and your friends are quite uneducated about mixed martial arts. And yeah, I didn’t read your blog very thoroughly. You do have a lot of wisdom in your words, but ultimately even the most wise are just fools. You might want to work on that nice little virtue called humility. As for your sarcastic input on repenting earlier… I wouldn’t joke about that. You might really need it… You have too much pride to be a born again.

By the way, I just read your entry on immigration and how you believe all hispanics, Asians, and blacks should be deported or shot. So why should native americans get to stay? Because they were here first? Understandable… but by that logic all the evil white europeans of barbaric decent that invaded America should be deported or shot as well. What about Jews? Well, that’d be impossible since they pretty much run this country.

Don’t bother replying back to my comments. This site has been a waste of my time.

You may be the dumbest person I’ve ever met.

    Congrats.

wow. just wow. brandon, i actually read your blog, and somehow i completely missed those invisible parts where you said that martial arts and boxing are sins. i’ll have to put on my secret codebreaker spy glasses next time. i never get to join in the fun part!

what i actually read (correct me if i’m wrong) is that you believe that violence towards another human being, created in god’s image, is not something we should thank god for. contact sports are fine. i’ve actually thought about doing some competetive boxing recently and i see nothing wrong with it. athletes choose to participate, knowing the risks. awesome. it’s just that if i bloody someone’s nose or give them a black eye i’m not going to thank jesus for helping me. nope. i’ll thank him for my health and that i’m able to be an athlete, but i won’t thank him for other people’s pain. they’re human.

next time clue me in when i should wear my “i see things that aren’t there” glasses. i want to make up shitty arguments and back them with straw-reasoning too.

firstly, i’m not a christian and i usually don’t enjoy hearing all the thanks ‘God’ gets for ANY accomplishments. and with that said,

Diego Sanchez is praising God, not praising Christians in general, and moreover, not praising Christians in general above others…

this is actually a really positive display of his faith. not that he beat his ooponent into a pulp to achieve the victory, but THAT HE ACHIEVED it.

you are not the chosen race, all decent people are. period.

    live well.

There are many Chrsitian in MMA and set a great example of how to live. Matt Hughes, Vitor Belfort, Randy Couture, Rich Franklin. God wants to preach to the whole world. How do you preach to Metal Heads, through metal music, how do you preach to Fighters, with Christian fighters. Paul said to preach to the Jews he became like a Jew, to preach to the gentiles he became like a gentile. These guys, christian and non christian eat healthy, work hard, respect their opponents and live a clean life. I love MMA and see it as a sport. Some people see it as a cock fight but really need to study the sport. The lives these guys leads are a million times better than any of us. Yet unfortunately they get judged for the 15 minutes in a cage. I read an article that in the last 100 years there have been over 1000 deaths in boxing and only 1 in MMA which was an unsanctioned fight in Russia.

MMA is a sport and a mix of technique/skill/power. The fighters like in other sports shake hands at the begining and end of the fights, always showing the opponent respect. No one has ever died in a UFC sactioned event! How many millions have died in the name of their god? All religion is silly! We all evolved to what we are today, (check out Darwin!) No garden of eden and all that jazz, every civilization has a similiar creation story, the key word STORY! Fossils dont lie.

Fossils don’t interpret themselves, either. They, like all scientific “evidence,” are interpreted according to certain presuppositions. For the evolutionist, the presuppositions are, “There is no God, there are millions of years, etc.” For the biblical creationist, they are, “God does exist, and he has given us His infallible Word, which can be trusted.” Check out http://www.answersingenesis.org
